Our names are Brian and Erika Thornburg, and we’ve been married since 1995. We have four amazing children… well, five if we want to stay out of trouble. There’s an extra one who claims to be ours—no official adoption paperwork, but she’s family all the same.
Erika has always loved making things from scratch and even owned a commercial bakery (or dessert restaurant, as we liked to call it) named Baked Addictions. When we relocated from Texas to Georgia in September 2019, the plan was to reopen Baked Addictions here. Then COVID happened. After several months and a lot of prayer, we made the tough decision to sell the equipment and let that dream take a new shape.
Today, Erika makes nearly all of our food from scratch using fresh milled flour. Brian is the official breakfast maker of the house—though he also makes a killer lasagna and loves cooking on the smoker or the Blackstone.
Our Rooted Mess exists to share our favorite recipes, fresh-milled flour creations, and the not-so-ordinary adventures of the Thornburg family. Our longtime friends say we should have our own HGTV show, so we decided to create our own version—right here.
